WHAT ROLE DOES THE CONFIRMATION SPONSOR PLAY IN THOSE PREPARING FOR THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION?  

On the other pages we have been clearly stressing that the role of a sponsor is much more than a title.  The individual asked by the candidate to be their sponsor has big shoes to fill.  It is a big commitment and must be taken seriously.  While it is certainly a honor to be asked, the individual asked to be a sponsor must reflect carefully before saying yes.  By saying "yes" you are accepting the awesome responsibility to accompany the candidate on their journey towards confirmation and beyond.  

At Saint Patrick Church it is important the sponsor be there at the rehearsal and be there on the day of confirmation.

Of course, we all know it takes more than that.  When asked by the candidate to be the sponsor it is important for you to set up a time to meet.   Get to know the candidate!  Find out what their interests are and ask them about their experience of Church.  Share with them about what you remember about your own confirmation.   Encourage them always to go to Mass.  If they are not going, if you are in the area, invite them to go with you!  Now if this isn't possible, use email and texting to remind the candidate of the importance of Sunday Mass and participation in the Sacraments. 

At the first meeting, you strive to know where the candidate is in their faith journey.  During that next meeting ask about what they are learning.  It is important that we encourage the candidate to open their hearts and minds to God and what He might be teaching them.   Don't be afraid to ask questions!  

Then at the third meeting ask about what they desire from the Church and what they would like to do for the Church.  It is important that we strive to keep young people engaged.  Invite them to be active.  The more they are active, the more they spend time with the Lord, this leads them on the road to true happiness.  

Now the role of a sponsor doesn't end with the candidate's reception of confirmation.  As their sponsor you are to keep encouraging them to be active and engaged in the faith.  When you accept the responsibility of being a sponsor, it is a lifelong commitment.  Please keep that in mind.  

As their sponsor remember the date of confirmation by sending them a card on their anniversary.  Also be sure to send them a card on their birthday.  Keep in contact with them and assist them on their faith journey.
